NAD+ Forms and Research Terminology
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide is a family of closely related redox cofactors commonly abbreviated as NAD. The labels NAD+, NADH, NADP+ and NADPH refer to distinct chemical states or phosphorylated forms. Precursors such as nicotinamide riboside and NMN are different molecules again.
NAD+ and NADH
NAD+ is the oxidised form and NADH is the reduced form. Together they participate in electron-transfer reactions across many experimental systems. The plus sign is part of the chemical notation; it does not describe product strength or quality.
Measurements of NAD+, NADH or a ratio between them are method-dependent. Extraction conditions, sample handling, enzymatic activity and assay specificity can materially affect the result.
NADP+ and NADPH
NADP+ and NADPH include an additional phosphate group and are commonly discussed in biosynthetic and antioxidant research contexts. Although related to NAD+/NADH, they should not be treated as interchangeable analytes. A method intended for one cofactor pair may not accurately quantify the other.
Niacin forms and NAD precursors
Nicotinic acid and nicotinamide are forms of vitamin B3 and can contribute to NAD biosynthetic pathways. Nicotinamide riboside (NR) and nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) are other molecules studied as NAD precursors. A precursor is not the same compound as NAD+, and findings for one molecule, formulation or model cannot automatically be transferred to another.
How to read a product name

Evidence and interpretation
NAD biology spans metabolism, redox chemistry, signalling and enzyme research. That breadth can make general claims sound more certain than the underlying evidence. A change in a biomarker in a particular model is not proof of a clinical or performance outcome, and results depend on the organism, tissue, route, timing, formulation and study design.
